Chislehurst House
Status: Completed
We worked closely with the clients, a young couple, to design a new sustainable family home in Chislehurst to replace an existing post-war house on a steeply sloping site. The proposal reinterprets the local architectural character through a carefully composed palette of high-quality traditional and contemporary materials, seeking to establish a contemporary vernacular for the area.
The house is designed as a five-bedroom family home arranged over two to three storeys, organised as a series of split-level half floors. This approach responds to the significant gradients across the site, allowing the building to work with the natural topography, minimise basement excavation, and take advantage of sweeping views across the surrounding landscape.
Singh Studio developed the project from initial feasibility through to planning approval in collaboration with Chris Slamon, progressing the design in considerable detail, including the interior concept and elevational composition. Particular care was taken to create an architectural language that sits comfortably within the street scene while avoiding pastiche. The fenestration is conceived as a crafted, pared-down contemporary interpretation of traditional forms, with brick piers and carefully considered detailing creating depth, shadow and definition across the façade.
