Jersey Beach House

Status: Completed

Set within the Coastal National Park at St Ouen’s Bay, Wishing Well explores an architecture grounded in the geological and elemental character of Jersey’s west coast. The project was conceived as a contemporary dwelling that emerges from the landscape, drawing on the material history of the island and the processes that shape its coastline.

The architectural concept developed by Singh Studio interprets the site through the language of sedimentation. Stabilised rammed earth incorporating locally sourced granite aggregate forms a monolithic structural core, expressing the layered formation of the island’s geology while anchoring the building to its coastal setting. This earth construction is paired with a rusticated granite base, referencing the island’s traditional farmhouses, defensive structures and granite boundary walls.

The elevational design and principal massing were developed through a series of sketches and 3D models that sought to express the building as a stratified composition of earth and stone. Openings are deeply set within the rammed earth mass, carving framed views toward the sea while reinforcing the sense of a building shaped from the ground itself. The architecture balances solidity and permeability, allowing light, wind and long views of the Atlantic landscape to permeate the interior.

The project was developed collaboratively to planning stage, with Singh Studio establishing the core architectural concept, material strategy, massing and elevational design. Fieldwork Architects subsequently led the project through detailed design, interiors and construction.

The resulting building seeks to embody a dialogue between architecture and landscape, where the materials of the site are reconstituted into a contemporary coastal dwelling that is both rooted in place and expressive of its geological context.
